What is an Instagram bio?

An Instagram bio is the 150-character description under your username on your Instagram profile page. Your photos show users what you are doing. Your bio is your chance to tell them who you are.

Your Instagram bio needs to convey your brand personality and show your audience that it's in the right place. After reading your bio, people should understand what you are doing and why they should follow you.

That's a lot to ask for from so little text. You need to employ some creative Instagram bio ideas to make your bio stand out.

What Makes a Good Instagram Bio?

The best bio for Instagram is one that will help keep new profile visitors clicking and clicking the "Follow" button. Ask yourself the following questions when deciding what to include in your Instagram bio:

  • What's your brand promise?
  • How about your brand personality: Funny? Serious? Informative? Playful?
  • What are your special skills?
  • Are you a local company? National? Multinational?
  • What makes your product or service unique?
  • What is the first thing you want to do after people visit your profile?

On this final point, all good marketing material contains a clear and compelling call to action. Your Instagram bio is no exception. Give visitors a clear direction.

You might want to use your Instagram link in bio to send people to a page where they can buy your products. However, you may have a different conversion goal in mind. You might want people to like your Facebook page or sign up for your newsletter.

If you're looking to build an Instagram following, your call to action might be to ask visitors to follow your feed or to share their photos with a branded hashtag.

Cool Instagram bio ideas

Not sure where to start yet? Here are some cool Instagram bio ideas for modeling.

1. Funny Instagram Bios

While it won't work for every brand, humor can sometimes be a great way to break the ice.

Old Spice uses humor that is consistent with the popular advertising campaigns. "MUSCLES. Smells. "Yeah, that's Old Spice in a nutshell.

Totinos takes a different approach and uses a fun character in her bio. (We'll admit we had to say "Pete Zaroll" out loud before we got the joke.)

Note that none of these fun Instagram bios directly say what the company is doing. You can only get away with this if you are a really well-known brand. But you can always play with humor in less extreme ways if that suits your brand personality.

If you can sum up what you do and what your Instagram feed is about in a few words, it won't hurt.

Instagram bios cannot be searched. That means you don't have to include any keywords in your bio. Nothing you write in your bio will improve your profile in Instagram search results.

Here are a few good Instagram bios that can be modeled from two completely different sources using this technique. Alexandra Gater is a home decor YouTuber while the NFL is the NFL. If this technique works for these two very different accounts, it can work for anyone.

Tricks to Create a Cool Bio for Instagram

Now that you have plenty of Instagram bio examples to model, let's look at some tricks to make your bio stand out.

9. Change your Instagram organic font

Technically, you can only use one "font" in your Instagram bio. However, there are tools you can use to create the look and feel of a custom font by mapping existing special characters to your text.

This is what my own Instagram bio looks like in a few different fonts created with the Instagram Fonts tool.

Instagram organic fonts 3

The third is a little bit crazy, but you can pick a few words to strategically incorporate for visual appeal. In general, it is a good idea to use this trick sparingly instead of adding fancy fonts to your entire bio.

When you find a font style you like, just copy and paste it into your Instagram bio.

10. Use Instagram Bio Icons

We've already talked about using emojis. Or you can go old school and use special text symbols to break up β˜… your β˜… biography. (Do you remember Wingdings and Webdings? How much 1990s.)

This trick uses the same principle as the tip above, but instead of using symbols to create the look of a custom font, you can use them as retro emojis or unique bullets:

The easiest way to find your special character is to open a new Google Doc, then click Insert and select Special Characters.

You can scroll through the options available, search for keywords, or even draw a shape to find a similar character. Then just copy and paste it into your Instagram bio.

11. Add a category

If you have a business profile on Instagram, you can choose a category for your business. This will appear under your name and can help people see what you are doing at a glance.

Using a category for your business can free up space on your Instagram bio as you don't have to repeat this information. However, it only shows up in mobile view so you can't assume everyone will see it.

Tricks 11-14 require you to edit your profile using the Instagram app, not your computer. On your profile page, click edit profile, then scroll down to Public business information.

12. Add contact buttons

Company profiles can contain contact buttons that people can use to call you, send you an email, or get directions to your company straight from Instagram.

13. Add a call-to-action button

CTA buttons are a great way to encourage people to take action right from your Instagram bio. With these, your followers can take direct action, such as: B. Order food in your restaurant or buy tickets for your event.

You can find these options at Action buttons when editing your company profile.

14. Add your location

If you add your address to your Instagram business profile, it will also show up under your bio, but it will not consume any of your bio characters. This is another great way to free up space for more compelling bioinformation.

Ontario Travel Toronto location

You do not need to enter your full address here if you do not want to. You can just indicate your city if you prefer.

15. Add a link in bio

You will get a clickable link in your Instagram bio. Since you can't use clickable links in Instagram feed posts (unless you're using Instagram ads or Instagram shopping), your bio link is valuable real estate.

You can change the URL as often as you want. You may want to create a link to your latest or most important piece of content (like your latest blog post or video), special campaign, or landing page specifically for Instagram visitors.

You can also use Instagram tools like Linktree to set up a multi-link mobile landing page so you don't have to keep updating the link in your Instagram bio, which can lead to outdated "link in bio" instructions in older posts.

We are now back in the realm of Instagram bio details available in both desktop and mobile views.

Wondering how to include a link on your Instagram bio? Just enter the link you want to use in the website Field in your profile.

16. Add hashtags

Hashtags in your Instagram bio are clickable links. Note, however, that Instagram bios will not appear in the hashtag search results. Adding hashtags to your bio doesn't make them any more recognizable.

That means you shouldn't include hashtags unless they are directly related to your business, as each hashtag represents an opportunity for potential followers to click away.

However, adding a branded hashtag to your bio is a great way to promote and collect user generated content.

This is one of the best ways for businesses to use hashtags on their bio. When a user clicks on the hashtag, they'll see all of the content that your fans and followers have posted. This creates excellent social proof for your business.

17. Add line breaks

People don't tend to read information online. Instead, they look for bite-sized blocks of information.

Use line breaks to make this information easy to identify.

It's really easy to add line breaks from Instagram web interface. Just place your bio the way you want.
