Building has long been a male dominated field. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, only about 13% of those employed in the construction industry are women – a number that has been relatively stagnant since the 1990s.

If the self-employed are also taken into account, the proportion is even lower at only 10.3%. Despite gender differences in employment, some job functions and locations offer better opportunities for women pursuing careers in the construction industry.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women who work in construction are most likely to work in office or administrative positions. In contrast, men are much more prominent in roles related to finance, transportation, construction, mining, and maintenance.

A big advantage for women in the construction industry is that they tend to earn higher wages than women workers in other areas. The median full-time wage for women in construction is $ 46,808 per year compared to $ 43,394 for women workers in all industries.

Although women are only 10.3% of workers in the construction industry, women are much more represented in some parts of the country. To find out which cities have the most women in construction, Construction Coverage researchers analyzed employment data from the 1-year estimates of the US Census Bureau's 2019 Community Survey.

The locations were classified according to the proportion of women employed in the construction industry. In the event of a tie, the location with the larger number of female construction workers was ranked higher. Only cities with at least 100,000 inhabitants and available data from the Census Bureau were included.

It is followed by the big cities with most women under construction.
