Will ChekMarc make social media giants shake in their boots?

LinkedIn dominates the job-seeking side of the social network, Twitter the more casual business side, and Facebook tries to connect friends and family.

Enter ChekMarc, which is aimed at people who want to improve their careers and progress, or learn more about personal hobbies.

The social platform received a $ 3 million seed capital fund and is now available worldwide in 35 languages.

What is ChekMarc?

Think LinkedIn has partnered with Facebook and The Open University, and you get an idea of what ChekMarc is trying to achieve.

The platform works with the value of:

"Building powerful connections that unite humanity."

The idea is simple, but when it takes off, powerful.

For example, digital marketers struggling to convince their employers to invest in training can get free one-on-one advice on how to continue learning through the platform.

Corporations are not allowed to advertise, and users are prohibited from soliciting money. ChekMarc believes that time, experience and knowledge should be the focus of the platform and not monetary gains.

Users can choose to be explorers, catalysts, or both.

What are explorers?

Explorers refer to those looking for a career or personal advice. Whether they want to write a book or learn a skill that will put them on their way to promotion, they can seek help or advice, and if someone in the ward wishes they can get in touch and connect.

To submit a review or request assistance, explorers fill out a form that states:

What are catalysts?

Catalysts is the name given to community members who have knowledge and experience they want to share.

Catalysts can either enter a topic in the search bar or navigate the categories to find and respond to queries from users.

Current categories are:

  • Professional
  • Art / music / entertainment
  • education
  • fitness
  • Social causes
  • Hobbies
  • House / real estate
  • health
  • Personal affairs
  • technology
  • travel
  • Other

From here, Catalysts can browse posts, save for later, reply, or mark the post as inappropriate.

I signed up

I'm a big fan of platforms like Ecosia. By using the website only, you are doing your part in making the world a better place.

We've all heard how detrimental social media can be to mental health. When I heard that a new social platform was being launched to "unite people in a positive way," I was intrigued.

However, I am also extremely careful when it comes to sharing information online. I tend to stick to websites that I know are safe or as secure as possible.

And that's not just me. Even big social giants like Facebook, Twitter and TikTok are considered untrustworthy by many Americans. What hope do smaller platforms have?

As I read it, I was concerned about the information the website would need as I kept seeing the term "verify" and one article even suggested that I should include a picture of my driver's license.

But I was curious so I started the sign up process and found it a lot less intrusive than expected.

I even had the option to hide certain information to stay as anonymous as possible.

Is ChekMarc Safe?

I don't think a digital platform will ever be 100% secure, but ChekMarc is CCPA and GDPR compliant and talks about the security of your information in Help.

Review the review

What puts me off the most is the verification process. When my confidence in a new brand is this low, the last thing I want to do is give them my card details (even if it's only for $ 1.60).

ChekMarc verification process

However, users are not required to verify their identities – so I didn't.

Those wishing to be screened must present a valid government-issued ID or passport and pay the fee.

As a result, a "V" will appear on your username. ChekMarc believes this will make the users more trustworthy.

Explorers can only publish three active requests at a time and twelve within a year. So if you do decide to sign up, make sure you really consider your questions before posting them.

Similarly, each query can receive a maximum of twenty responses from catalysts. Therefore, those who wish to pass on their wisdom should be sure of their ability.

There is also a limit to how many times you can edit your own account information. However, there is an option to contact the platform for help if you reach this limit.

Final thoughts

When I started the sign up process, I felt really uncomfortable. This was a page that I knew very little about and that is vastly new, but there is a lot of information on their page that gives me my peace of mind.

While ChekMarc probably isn't very high on the social giants' radar right now, I'll definitely be watching this room to see if it grows into something that will turn heads.

Check out ChekMarc here.
