It's been a slow week in search news because of the holidays, but hey – things never stand idle in our industry. There has been some speculation that Google did some sort of algorithm update over the Christmas weekend, but it seems highly dubious. Google's Danny Sullivan explained that the pages that were ranked based on the indexing of passages looked no different. In addition, the use of the nosnippet tag has no influence on the ranking for the passage indexing. Oh, and updating the page experience and indexing the passages have nothing to do with each other – which you probably already knew. Google is testing the display of study exercise problems in search results. Google is also testing short videos from TikTok and Instagram. Bing tests related content overlays for image results. The Google Search Console problem validation error seems to work. Google is testing the display of service reasons in the local package. Google's John Mueller gave some SEO advice for 2021 a few weeks ago. John was also seen helping out on Christmas Day and New Years. And I hope you didn't miss the Google Doodles and Confetti from News Years Eve and Day. I wish you all a happy, healthy and successful year 2021! Oh, and if you'd like to sponsor these vlogs, go to patreon.com/barryschwartz. That was the search news this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.
