The construction industry is struggling to attract young workers, which contributes to persistent labor shortages. The demand for new construction continues to be high and many construction companies are unable to find the workers they need to meet the demand.

As the proportion of young construction workers decreases, construction workers are getting older. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median age of construction workers was 41 years in 2019, up from 39 years ago a decade ago.

While the construction industry was once popular with young workers, it is now older than some other industries that attract young people. The average age of workers in the hospitality industry is 30, while the average age of retail workers is 36. The average age of workers in all industries is 41, just like in construction.

To find the metropolitan areas with the youngest and oldest construction workers in the United States, researchers from Construction Coverage, a review website for construction management software and homeowner risk insurance, analyzed the latest data from the US Census Bureau. The researchers classified the metropolitan areas according to the average age of the construction workers.

The researchers also calculated the proportion of construction workers under 30, the proportion of construction workers over 50 and the total number of construction workers in the labor force.

In order to improve the relevance, only metropolitan areas with at least 100,000 inhabitants were included in the analysis.

The subways follow with the youngest and oldest construction workers.

Detailed results and methodology

The Oklahoma City subway area has the most youthful construction workers of any major subway, with half of its construction workers under the age of 35. Texas is home to four of the major subway areas with the youngest construction workers, each with an average age of 38 for their construction workers. Among the small and medium sized subways with the youngest construction workers, some places are even younger, with the median construction age in their lower 30s.

The major subways with the oldest construction workers are on the east coast and the Midwest. The mean age of construction workers in these metropolises is in the mid-1940s and thus above the national median of 41. On average, construction workers over 50 make up a third of all construction workers in these cities.

To find the cities with the youngest and oldest construction workers in the US, Construction Coverage researchers analyzed the latest data from the US Census Bureau's 2019 American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample. The researchers classified the metropolitan areas according to the average age of the construction workers.

In the event of a tie, the underground with the greater proportion of construction workers under 30 was ranked higher for the list of youngest workers and the underground with the greater proportion of construction workers over 50 was ranked higher for the list of oldest workers. The researchers also calculated the total number of construction workers.
