What is ConvertKit?

ConvertKit is an email service provider (ESP). Essentially, it's a technology service that allows you to send email campaigns to a list of subscribers. ConvertKit is one of literally hundreds of ESPs, and – full disclosure – it just happens to be the one we prefer and use at SPI. While we're biased, in this post we're going to cover the features, pros, and cons of ConvertKit to help you decide if it's the right ESP for your business.

By the time you're reading this, you may already know what an ESP is and why you need one. If you don't, an ESP is the primary technology to aid your email marketing strategy. Email marketing is one of the most powerful ways to build relationships and market your products and services to your audience.

Let's talk about why that is.

In its simplest form, email marketing means sending email to a group of people who have chosen to hear from you by subscribing to receive email from you. You can technically use a simple email program like Gmail to accomplish this. We don't recommend it, however, as you can quickly find it inadequate (and because your personal email account will be marked as spam if you send too many emails from it!).

As your business grows and more people subscribe to your email, you want the opportunity to do more sophisticated tasks with your email marketing, such as: For example, tailoring the emails people receive to their interests and using reports and analysis to determine what is working or not working well.

You also need to make sure that you respect people's privacy concerns and are not spamming anyone. An email service provider can also help you comply with legal requirements around the world, such as: B. the CAN-SPAM Act in the USA, the General Data Protection Regulation in the European Union (GDPR) and the Canadian Anti-Spam Act (CASL).

Without the help of a dedicated email marketing platform, things can quickly get out of hand. This is where an ESP like ConvertKit comes into play.

Okay, let's take a closer look at the key features of ConvertKit!

ConvertKit functions

These are the main functions of ConvertKit, categorized according to their usage.

Send emails

  • Autoresponder / drip campaigns. Automatically send a series of pre-written emails to a specific segment of subscribers on your list, triggered by a specific event or action, with the aim of directing them to a specific action.
  • Broadcast emails. Send standard announcements or one-time emails to your subscribers on a specific date.
  • CAN-SPAM, GDPR and CASL conformity. CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and CASL are laws that set the rules and requirements for commercial email messages and give recipients the right to stop sending emails – so compliance is vital!
  • Dynamic (personalized) email content. Your email content can display different text or images depending on customer segmentation.
  • Responsive email templates: Ready-to-use email designs and the ability to create your own custom templates. ConvertKit will automatically format your landing pages for various devices such as desktop computers and mobile phones.
  • WYSIWYG email editor. With the built-in email editor, you can see how your email will look if your template's styling is applied as it is created.

Collect new subscribers

  • Custom responsive landing pages. Use the included tool to quickly create a landing page for collecting email addresses. ConvertKit will automatically format your landing pages for various devices such as desktop computers and mobile phones.
  • Embeddable forms. Collect email subscribers anywhere on your website by entering a Javascript or HTML form or using the WordPress plugin.
  • sell products. Set up a landing page and collect payments for one-time or subscription products right in ConvertKit
  • Visual automation. ConvertKit lets you create rule-based paths using if-then logic. When a subscriber takes a certain action, you can send them predefined emails or add them to a segment.

Learn more about your subscribers

  • A / B tests. With ConvertKit you can test different subject lines for your emails and automatically determine the winner based on the respective open rates.
  • Reporting / analysis / ROI tracking. Learn how often your subscribers open your email, click links, and take various actions.
  • Segmentation / tagging. By segmenting your subscribers into different categories (similar but more powerful than other programs' “lists”), you can send them emails that are better tailored to their needs and interests.

ConvertKit prices

ConvertKit only offered paid plans for a long time. But in December 2019 the company announced one New free tier if you have less than 1,000 subscribers.

  • Send email broadcasts

Creator

  • $ 25 / month for up to 1,000 subscribers (paid annually)

The creator plan contains:

  • Free migration from another tool

Creator Pro

Now let's go over the reasons why we like ConvertKit!

Advantages of ConvertKit

We have been using ConvertKit for several years to drive SPI Media's email marketing campaign. During this time we have found that it is the ideal ESP for our needs. From our seat, the performance of ConvertKit can be divided into two main categories: User benefits, and Benefits for the audience.

ConvertKit benefits from the user's point of view

First, ConvertKit has everything a business owner needs to get up and running quickly:

  • You can collect emails.
  • You can set up a simple landing page for collecting emails.
  • You can sell products (one-time purchase or subscription).

With these features someone can start selling even if they are currently setting up a website in a different location. It also makes it easy to carry out one of the most important lessons in our Smart From Scratch course: using sales as a key step in the idea validation process.

Second, the ConvertKit team designed their platform to grow with the sophistication of the user. When you start out, you probably just want to collect email addresses and send emails. However, as you grow, you'll want to customize your message and segment your audience. At this point, you can take advantage of things like automation and dynamic content. As you get more demanding, ConvertKit grows with you – you don't have to switch to another email service provider five years later. This is what sets ConvertKit apart from some other ESPs, notably Mailchimp.

Some people find ConvertKit a little daunting (see Cons below), but if you're a bit tech-savvy we find it pretty accessible. We particularly like the accessibility of ConvertKit's automation builder, which allows you to build automations in a simple, linear way. We tried Infusionsoft for a year and found the Automation Builder challenging but overwhelming. You already had to understand how automations work and which symbols are commonly used in automation manufacturers. We find that ConvertKit's automation builder, on the other hand, makes it easy to tie automations together in an advanced way.

We also like ConvertKit's approach to subscriber management. With ConvertKit, all of your subscribers go into one large pool. There are no lists. Instead, subscribers can be segmented by assigning them attributes using tags and custom fields. These allow you to treat your subscribers as unique people with different needs. Not all subscribers are created equal.

ConvertKit benefits for your audience

ConvertKit gives you the ability to tailor your messages to suit your audience. You can have as many forms and landing pages as you want. You can have as many tags, custom fields, and segments as you want. You can speak to your audience as precisely as you want. By gathering information about your target audience, you can segment subscribers so you don't bother people with things they are not interested in. With ConvertKit, you can easily collect details about your target audience and not be penalized for having higher costs like you would with a list-based email platform.

Cons of ConvertKit

Of course, no solution is perfect. Here are some of the downsides that we and other ConvertKit users have found.

  • Moderately steep learning curve. The user interface can be a bit overwhelming for beginners. To get the most out of all of ConvertKit's features like segmentation, tagging, and automation, there is something you need to learn (and possibly code). You can shorten this learning curve by following the Getting Started video series.
  • Not a list-based organization. While we like the way ConvertKit lets you organize subscribers using tags (and doesn't charge you for duplicate subscribers like some ESPs do), the lack of a list-based organization system can be confusing when you're from other platforms come. However, we believe that over time you will find this system more flexible than managing lists.
  • Barebones email and landing page templates. Requires CSS coding to create custom advanced email templates and landing pages that go beyond the options included. Some users report that the email design tool may be buggy.
  • Analytics could be more robust. The free version of ConvertKit doesn't offer the same advanced reporting options as the Creator and Creator Pro options. This makes sense, but it can be problematic for some users.

Fortunately, one of the previous downsides to ConvertKit that it didn't have a free option is no longer valid! In fact, this was probably the biggest downside to ConvertKit reported by contributors to the ConvertKit review page on Capterra.com. This free tier makes ConvertKit comparable to other popular ESP options like Mailchimp at the entry level.
