As early as 2018, Google added the ability to enable Google Maps users to track companies – hence Google My Business Follower. But is there any value in that?

Google said at the time that the value is that you can "make offers to your followers to keep them coming back to the door and soon you will be able to reply to messages right from the app". But do local SEO experts use it? I haven't seen much communication about it at all. Indeed, some say they find no value in it.

Claire Carlile asked about this on Twitter a while ago:

Anyone who is actively working to get followers of their GMB listing on Google Maps ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ – Does anyone else have a problem where the offer for new followers keeps disappearing and has to be added over and over again? @SydneyMarchuk @SeoAllie @Its_Liz_Linder ๐Ÿง pic.twitter.com/qQPuwhBUJC

Joy Hawkins replied on Twitter, saying, "I honestly didn't bother so I'm not sure. I couldn't see the value in that."

That's why I didn't see you at @JoyanneHawkins – I knew your attitude towards it! This is my only customer with a "large" fan base. My facility time was met with attributable income very early on

Nicolai Helling added that he tried and didn't see any big changes from trying to increase the number of followers here:

It's a good place to start though – let us know when you see results! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Allie Margeson shared her experience:

Wow 151 followers in GMaps! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ We haven't worked on building followers, but I know @LowJessie has a welcome offer for Whitespark. You could have more insight into the disappearing supply case ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿฅธ

Here are even a few more questions about how it's been going over the past few weeks:

I set it up for a client, it took 5 minutes and we had some sales due to the welcome offer. It doesn't fit all types of business!

At the moment, none of the functions is very busy, visibility is restricted and a waste of time.

Here is the Google help document on Followers on Google My Business. This is how it looks:
