Organic life can be very expensive. Organic foods, for example, are usually much more expensive than regular foods. This need not be.

Surprisingly, there are hidden tricks you can live organically with – even when money is tight. Here's how.

How to live an organic lifestyle on a budget

A biological lifestyle is not just about the food you eat. There are toxins everywhere in modern society. However, there are ways to live organically, regardless of your budget.

Personally, I have been feeding my four children and myself largely organically for several years. And our average grocery bill is usually between $ 450 and $ 600 a month.

Here are some of the tricks and tips that I use to make sure my family leads an organic lifestyle on a budget.

1. Buy organic food for sale

Organic groceries in the supermarket can be expensive. They are often almost twice as expensive as non-organic food.

For example, non-organic strawberries typically cost between $ 1.19 and $ 1.99 for a 16-ounce package at my local Aldi. A 16-ounce container of organic strawberries usually costs $ 2.99.

For this reason, my family and I almost always buy organic food when it is for sale. We find lower prices in three ways:

  • Buy organic while selling
  • Look for generic or branded organic foods
  • Buy from discounters or warehouse clubs

For example, Aldi stores typically have lower prices for organic (and non-organic) vegetables and fruits than most other stores.

They also offer a selection of organic food every week. That is why we always stop at Aldi when buying organic.

Discounters like Aldi – and even large stores – often also offer branded organic produce. Camp clubs too.

For example, do you remember the $ 2.99 organic strawberries I talked about earlier? The container of the same size costs in other grocery stores – including Walmart – between $ 3.99 and $ 5.99.

Aldi provides organic olive oil, canned beans and more for about a third of its branded products. This means 30% savings on your organic food bill.

Check your warehouse clubs

Camp clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club also offer great deals on organic food. Organic vegetables, fruits and dairy products are available from your local camp club store.

For example, organic butter in our Walmart costs $ 5.98 per pound. Organic butter at our local Costco costs $ 4.49 a pound. That is 25% savings.

Note that you need to buy the Costco butter in a two-pound pack. But you will probably still use both packs anyway.

Combine lower organic prices with lower prices for other items, and the money you save can almost always offset the annual membership fee.

You can also share your membership with a family member or friend to save even more.

2. Buy at the farmers markets

If you buy organic food in the supermarket, organic prices can cost more. You can spend a lot of money on groceries in the grocery store thanks to the overhead of running a shop front.

One place where you can buy organic groceries for less money is the local farmers market. The food is very fresh and tasty. This is because they are picked again instead of spending hours or days in a grocery store.

Farmers' markets are very common in most areas these days. They usually run all summer long and into autumn.

Ask farmers' market sellers if their products are organic. Most, but not all, providers have labeled them when they do.

Google "Farmers Markets" and your city to find market days and hours near you.

Don't forget to buy organic meat

Purchasing organic meat in grocery stores can be expensive. However, organic meat is often offered for sale at the farmers' markets.

We buy grass-fed organic chicken at our local farmers market. Another idea is to buy directly from local farmers.

There is an organic grass-fed beef farmer in our region who sells his beef for just $ 5 a pound. He doesn't use antibiotics or hormones. And he doesn't use pesticides on his lawns.

This is a lot cheaper than what local markets sell beef fed organic grass for. In our region, organic weed is sold for $ 9 a pound.

Contact local farmers in your area for a cheaper selection of organic meat.

3. Grow your own food

It's even better than growing your own food when buying from farmers. You can create an organic garden in your own garden. There will be a few steps you need to follow before your garden can thrive.

You need to prepare the floor and remove any remaining synthetic chemicals. After that, care of the floor is required. Compost can be a good source of nutrients for your plants.

Choosing the right plants is important. The key is to choose plants that thrive in the environment you live in and that respond well to the elements and temperature.

Tip: Choose vegetables and fruits that you and your family like to eat.

It's easy to get carried away when you create a garden.

Don't have a yard? Plant with a friend who does this, or use large pots to plant your favorite vegetables and herbs. Place them outside on your deck or patio.

Focus on the vegetables your family eats the most for maximum profit and minimum waste.

4. Store your home-grown food

Going organic often means going to the store every other day. Due to the lack of pesticides, the products go bad faster.

To solve this problem, learn how to store your home-grown food. You can minimize waste by storing fresh fruits and vegetables properly.

Freezing and preserving home-grown food

For example, most fruits and berries can also be frozen or processed into jams. Look for cucumbers, asparagus, garlic, and onions.

Take your tomatoes and turn them into salsa or spaghetti sauce. There are countless options!

Bonus: Properly preserved foods last for several years and taste much better than canned food.

5. Make your own cleaning products

There are simple ways to combine natural ingredients into cleaning products. Baking soda, vinegar, soap, lemon and cornstarch are some popular ingredients that can be used for household cleaning.

For example, we use a homemade window cleaner in our house, which consists of:

  • 25 percent white distilled vinegar
  • 25 percent alcohol
  • 50 percent water

This homemade cleaner makes our windows sparkling clean. Bonus: It's much better for the environment – both at home and outside in your garden.

Organic essential oils like lemon oil and lavender oil are great air fresheners. Use them in a diffuser to make your home smell clean and fresh.

Note: Some essential oils are toxic to pets such as cats and dogs. If you are a pet owner, do some research before using essential oils in a diffuser.

Baking soda for scrubbing

Use baking soda instead of chemical detergents for your home. The abrasive nature of baking soda is great for scrubbing bathtubs and more.

However, it will not give off harmful vapors or contain harmful chemicals.

The use of homemade cleaning products is much better for everyone in the long run. You can save money by not buying the expensive chemical detergents in the store.

What is better, your health is not adversely affected by toxins and by-products. Natural cleaning products are particularly popular with parents who have young children at home.

However, everyone can benefit from using non-toxic detergents.

6. Reduce your radiation exposure

In today's modern world, WLAN, mobile phones and electronic devices expose us to much more radiation than years ago.

It has been shown that constant radiation leads to health problems in children and adults.

There are several ways to live in clean air and reduce radiation exposure.

  • Turn off your WiFi router when you are not using it, e.g. B. at night when you are sleeping or during the day when you are working
  • Limit the use and exposure of cell phones and other electronic devices, especially in children
  • Do not wear your cell phone on your body
  • Exchange your microwave for a steam convection oven
  • If possible, use wired landline phones instead of cell phones or cordless phones
  • Use wired headphones when speaking on your cell phone
  • Limit wireless items in your home. Have you wired baby monitors and alarm systems instead?
  • Use grounding to combat the effects of radiation exposure. Go barefoot on dirt and grass in a natural environment and let your feet absorb the healthy minerals from the ground

7. Buy organic clothing and household items if you can

Certain companies sell clothing, bedding, and household items made from organic cotton and other ingredients. However, these items can be expensive.

Consider buying them when they come at sale prices. Or you can find used organic brand names in thrift stores, flea markets or on online sites.

Stores such as EcoChoices and the Ultimate Green Store have sales / release tabs on their websites to help you get cheaper prices.

Organic clothing is expensive. If your budget doesn't allow for a larger clothing budget, you can still take steps to minimize toxin exposure.

For example, you can use organic or all natural detergents when washing your clothes. Use at least smaller amounts of your preferred inorganic detergent.

We still use our preferred inorganic detergent, but use about a sixth of what is required in the instructions. And we have completely stopped using dryer sheets.

Our clothes no longer smell of perfume, but we expose our body to less chemicals, so it's worth the "sacrifice".


Living naturally is a big goal. You will be healthier and happier for it. What's better, it doesn't have to be a burden on your wallet to change your lifestyle.

There are many different ways you can change your lifestyle. Organic food is a big part of natural life. You can either buy your groceries at farmers' markets or grow them yourself.

This way you save money and know exactly what is going into your food.

Making your own cleaning products can be a big change in your life. You and your family can reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals. And they clean just as well as all synthetic products.
