Facebook Image Size and Aspect Ratio: What's the Difference?

There are two important things to keep in mind when sharing Facebook pictures: aspect ratio and size.

But what's the difference?

Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio refers to the width of the photo in relation to its height. It is expressed as a ratio like 1: 1 or 9:16, with the first number representing width and the second representing height.

For example, Facebook stories are 9:16 while a Facebook cover photo is 16: 9.

size

Size (or resolution) refers to the scale of a photo or video. For digital images, this is usually measured by the number of pixels in an image, written as width x height.

For example, an image size of 1080 x 1080 pixels is much larger than a size of 50 x 50 pixels.

Facebook image size

When you share a photo or video on Facebook, the image displayed (both the app and the web) is usually much smaller than the original that you uploaded.

Even if you upload a photo that is 1080 pixels wide, the image displayed on Facebook will be compressed to a smaller size.

If Facebook automatically compresses your photos and videos, does image size even matter?

It sure does! Although Facebook compresses your photos and videos, it is always better to share them at an optimal resolution. When Facebook compresses your photo, it doesn't really affect the image quality.

Note: That doesn't mean you will be posting photos at ultra-high resolution like 5400 x 5400 pixels. This actually has a negative effect on your image quality!

However, for optimal viewing, it is best to use a mobile-first approach.

Select an aspect ratio of 9:16 for a more enjoyable and streamlined experience for your mobile audience.

Square videos should be 1: 1 ratio and 1080 x 1080x in size.

Finally, for horizontal video, choose a ratio of 16: 9.

Recommended ratio: 4: 5

Recommended size: 1080 x 1350 pixels

Facebook Size Guide # 3: Facebook Stories

Just like with Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories follow a 9:16 ratio and use dimensions of 1080 x 1920 pixels.

When creating Facebook Stories, keep in mind that there is about 14% (or 250 pixels) of space left at the top and bottom of the image as this area is obscured by the sponsored label and called for action on the screen.

Facebook Size Guide # 4: Cover Images

When creating a Facebook Page, Group, or Event, think about how your page will look above the fold. When you have fascinating images and text above the crease, you have a better chance of attracting your followers at first sight.

Cover images look different between mobile phones and desktops – on mobile phones they are larger at 640 x 360 pixels and on the desktop at 820 x 312 pixels wider.

The bad news is you can't upload two different photos. On the positive side, however, Facebook doesn't stretch your picture, but rather crops it to fit the device you're using. Therefore, it is very important to adhere to the ratios recommended by Facebook.

Optimize your cover photo for desktop and mobile for the best results. Keep your important copies and pictures in the center of the picture so they can be easily seen on any device.

NOTE: When choosing a cover photo for your personal page, keep in mind that your profile picture will overlap in the lower middle part of the picture.
