Google's John Mueller had to confirm that you don't need a Google My Business verified business listing to appear in Google web search. You need a Google My Business listing to show up well in Google Maps and local package results, or to show a local panel when searching but not when searching the web.
Someone asked on Twitter: "Is (GMB) Google my business to display your search results on Google?" John Mueller replied, "No, that's not a requirement."
Here are the tweets:
No, that is not a requirement.

This is a screenshot of this website showing up in Google search and it doesn't have a Google My Business listing for it. And yes, we get traffic from Google Search even without a Google My Business listing.
My company, RustyBrick, has both an organic listing on the left and a local panel listing on the right – that's the difference:
The two are really separate and not dependent on each other. If you are a business, it is highly recommended that you have a Google My Business listing so customers can find you in the local results.
