Microsoft released its version of the Ad Quality Year in Review 2020. Microsoft said it banned around 300,000 ad accounts in 2020, up 30% from 2019. 1.6 billion "bad ads" have been removed and about 21 million ads rejected according to its sensitive advertising policy. In addition, 270,000 locations were removed from the system.
How does this compare to the Google Ads report? According to its own information, Google has blocked or removed more than 3.1 billion ads for violating its Google Ads guidelines, restricted over 6.4 billion ads, blocked over 1.7 million advertising accounts and ads from over 1.3 billion pages per year 2020 removed.
Microsoft said it had a focus on these five areas:
- Dealing with the pandemic
- Political advertising
- Third Party Government Services
- Technical support fraud and phishing attacks
- Advertiser security
People are complaining, Microsoft said, which will help them fight this. Microsoft announced in 2020 that it had received a total of ~ 50,000 complaints related to ads that did not meet Microsoft's advertising guidelines. They investigated each complaint and found that ~ 65% of the reported ads violated Microsoft Advertising Guidelines. Most of the complaints were related to trademark infringements, the company said.
It's interesting to see how they deal with bad advertisers from platform to platform from year to year.
