Over the years I've sold a lot of things for extra money.
My most lucrative sales included clothing, electronics, and shoes. But nowadays I not only sell my things, but also my skills and services. Combining the two was a great way to grow my income while growing my freelance business.
Whether you want to sell excess or unwanted items, or are a freelance writer or babysitter, you can sell what you have or do online. In fact, there are more things to sell online for cash than you might think.
You don't have to own high quality items to make money online. There are many ways you can use your skills to make extra cash or remove things that you no longer want or use.
1. Your opinions
RomarioIen / Shutterstock.com
You can earn money for your opinion by completing paid surveys. This is easy and can be done in your spare time. All you need is an internet connection and an internet accessible device to get started. These online survey websites pay for your honest opinions on products, brands, and activities.
Each survey page pays in points that you can exchange for cash or gift cards. Some popular options for selling your mind are Swagbucks, Branded Surveys, and Survey Junkie.

Many people hold onto their old, unwanted electronics because they don't know what to do with them. Clear up space in your home and make some money selling your electronics in the process. You can sell old phones, computers, clocks, game consoles and more on Decluttr.
Decluttr is a website and app that allows you to rate your items instantly. This takes the guesswork out of pricing your electronics and saves you time since you don't have to list items one by one.
3. Gift cards

Gift cards are a popular gift idea when people don't know what else to buy. However, if you get one for a deal that you don't like or that isn't near you, you can make extra money by selling it on Raise.
Raise resells unwanted gift cards and stores funds. Almost all transactions are carried out virtually. A card is free to list, and you get paid by check, PayPal, or direct deposit after it is sold.
4. Rental space

Many travelers prefer to stay in a house rather than a hotel while on vacation. If you have a vacant room or apartment, you can make extra cash by renting it on Airbnb for days, weeks, or even months.
Airbnb hosts make an average of $ 500 a month, according to a survey by Earnest. How much you can earn just depends on how much extra space you have, where you live and what amenities you offer.
First of all, make sure you are allowed to rent out your house or room. Some homeowners' associations have rules against renting out your home, while some landlords also don't want people to sublet your home. If you are clear about this, you can become an Airbnb host and start making money right away.

Don't throw away your textbooks when the semester ends. Instead, consider selling them on BookScouter. This website compares offers from 30+ book purchase sellers to help you make the most of your money.
To sell on BookScouter, provide information about the book and its condition, and decide which offer to accept. Textbooks are sent for free and you get paid quickly, sometimes on the same day your books are received.

If you have clothes that you don't wear or that your kids have outgrown, you can take them to a local consignment store and earn a portion of the profit from selling. You can also make a profit on your unwanted clothing with ThredUp, an online thrift store.
To sell on ThredUp, request a Clean Out Bag, fill it with clothing, and send it back so it can be sold on the ThredUp website. If your items don't sell, they'll be returned to you for a small fee or you can donate them. They can be paid for using PayPal or ThredUp credit.
You can also make money on unwanted clothing by selling apps like Poshmark, letgo or the Facebook marketplace.

If you have accumulated too many pairs of shoes and you want to tidy up your closet, consider reducing your collection.
Shoes are great items to sell at Poshmark, Mercari, Swap.com, and ThredUp. Before you sell your shoes, check each website's policies, listing requirements, and any fees that may apply. You want to make sure that you are following the directions and getting the most money for your shoes.
8. Used furniture

Even if your furniture isn't antiques, you can still make good money selling your used furniture online. List your pieces on letgo, a free website that allows you to post local items for sale. You register for an account, list your items for sale, and wait for a quote.
To ensure that your items sell, it is recommended that you do your listing thoroughly and completely, and include high quality photos of the item.
The letgo app targets your region so you don't have to worry about shipping large items, which are often expensive.

Whether you take photos as a professional or as a hobby, you can make extra cash by selling your photos online to sites like Getty Images or Shutterstock.
Popular photo categories include food, architecture, portraits, travel, and city skylines. You can snap away, pick the best photos, and upload them to stock websites for review.
10. Handmade goods

Whether you enjoy creating hair bows, digital prints or wall hangings, you can make money selling your creations on Etsy, Society6 or Facebook Marketplace. Take some pictures of your product, add a description and price, and post it online.

You can get rid of your children's old toys and tidy up your home by selling unwanted board games, puzzles, dolls, stuffed animals, and more on sites like Craigslist or eBay.
You can even collect gently used toys at flea markets, yard sales, and thrift stores, thoroughly clean them, and sell them online for a profit.

Furniture and decorations loved a few decades ago can often be sold to antique lovers for a profit. List your pieces on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist to reach a local market, or eBay to reach potential buyers from across the country.
Buying and selling antiques can also become a lucrative hobby if you are patient enough to browse local thrift and consignment stores or spend a day shopping at yard sales and flea markets. You can even get some gems by checking piles of trash on trash days.

Selling scrap metal to junkyards can be a lucrative part-time job if you know where to look. Many items that you can throw away, such as broken appliances, copper wires, old auto parts, bolts and screws or fittings, can be worth a lot of money in a junkyard.
You could amass a decent pile of junk by looking around your house and garage, checking the curb, and offering to clean up piles of trash for free. Another option is to visit Craigslist's free section or ask your friends and family members to send them their scrap metal.
Don't forget that aluminum cans can also be scrapped for cash. Search local junk yards online when you have enough metal or aluminum to make money.

If you don't want to get rid of unwanted items and you don't want to have artisanal or physical products available for sale, you should market and sell your services instead.
If you are at least 18 years old, in good health, and meet some basic screening requirements, you can be paid to donate your plasma. If you have previously donated blood, you are likely a good candidate for a plasma donation. The difference is that, unlike a blood bank, plasma centers reimburse donors for their time.
The amount of money you will receive varies, but donating plasma can usually become a regular side gig. Many give bonuses to people who donate regularly. Search online for a local plasma donation center near you.
15. Virtual Assistant Services

To become a virtual assistant, you need an internet connection, the ability to organize and work with multiple clients at the same time, and skills that business owners seek.
Since companies need help with tasks such as social media management, customer service, or answering emails, there are many opportunities for you to work as a VA, even without special skills or training.
16. Freelance writing
Roman Samborskyi / Shutterstock.com
Companies and websites are looking for qualified people to write content for them. If you enjoy writing, consider becoming a freelance writer and turning your passion into a paid gig.
The best way to get into the business is by picking a popular niche and looking for potential customers. Technical categories usually pay more than pop culture or wellness.
17. Walking the dog
McKy Stocker / Shutterstock.com
If you love animals, you can make some extra cash by sitting with other people's dogs or pets for them. You can do this sideline in addition to your daily work or as a substitute when you are unemployed or between jobs.
Services can range from walking the dog every day to sitting with pets for a week. Post your services in local Facebook groups and spread the news among friends and family. You can also sign up for Rover, a website and app that connects pet owners with local pet handlers and dog walkers.
18. Baby sitting

Parents everywhere turn to Care.com to find qualified local babysitters. This is a good option if you enjoy working with children and are looking for a regular weekly gig or just a few hours a month to supplement your income.
Care.com compares families with qualified local caregivers who are pre-screened by the website and available for their needs. You can set your own hours and babysit from home or at the child's house.

It's easy to make extra cash in addition to cleaning a local home or business. You can set your own hours and have one-time or returning customers.
Find local jobs by posting your services on Facebook groups, or create a home cleaning profile on Care.com or Thumbtack. The more customers you take in, the more referrals you can get, which can lead to steady income.
20. Car washing
tommaso79 / Shutterstock.com
If housekeeping isn't your forte, consider washing cars instead. Lots of people love the idea of a sparkling clean car but don't want to do the job themselves. This is where you come in. All you need is water, soap, buckets and sponges.
Offer your services locally on Facebook, post flyers or business cards on public bulletin boards, and ask your friends and family to give you verbal recommendations. If you are part of a neighborhood group on NextDoor or Facebook, you can publish your services there too.
