There is a lot Misinformation FUD (Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt) related to Google Penalties. The most common mistake is an algorithm for a penalty.

High profile updates like Penguin and Panda aren't actually penalties. They are algorithms. Algorithms are based on a series of rules and calculations to automatically achieve the desired result.

In the case of Panda & Penguin, the end game for Google is to demote websites in search results that do not meet the quality standards defined in the Webmaster Guidelines.

Google also employs an army of human reviewers to manually review and flag websites.

Despite all the best efforts, there are still many websites that slide through the algorithms but do not meet Google's quality standards.

It is expected that RankBrain and BERT will make the algorithm "smarter" over time and reduce the need for these human reviewers.

Being on the wrong side of an algorithm sure feels like a punishment. The net result can be the same – a huge and sometimes devastating loss of organic traffic.

It's important to understand the difference between impacting your website with a manual penalty and triggering an algorithm.

It defines how to proceed when developing a recovery strategy.

The most notable difference between a penalty and an algorithmic event is the need and ability to interact directly with Google.

A website that is penalized by Google receives a manual action report through the Google Search Console.

As soon as the identified violation has been resolved, you must explain the causes of the problem and the solution in a “Request for re-examination”.

Conversely, there is no need (or ability) to re-submit a review request to avoid an algorithmic smack-down.

This post focuses on known manual penalties and recovery steps.

Camouflage and / or devious redirects

When camouflaging, users are shown different pages than on Google. Sneaky redirects send users to a different page than what Google is seeing.

Both actions violate Google's webmaster guidelines.

This is another punishment that comes in two forms:

  • Partial matches Impact on parts of your website.
  • Site-wide matches Impact on your entire website.

The repair

  1. Navigate to Google Search Console> Crawl> Get As Google, then pull pages from the affected areas of your website.
  2. Compare the content of your website with the content retrieved by Google.
  3. Solve any discrepancies between the two so that they end up being the same.
  4. Check all redirects. Remove redirects that:
    • Send users to an unexpected destination.
    • Conditional redirection (e.g. only redirecting users from a specific source).
    • Are otherwise "sneaky".
  5. Submit a re-examination request after resolving these issues.

Pro tip: These types of redirects are often created by CMS plugins, may be in your .htaccess file, or can be written in JavaScript.

Sneaky mobile redirects

Some or all of the pages on a website direct mobile users to content that is not visible to Google's crawlers. This is a direct violation of the Google Webmaster Guidelines.

Once detected, there is usually a manual action that removes URLs from the search index.

overview

It's not uncommon for the mobile version of a website to display content slightly differently than the desktop version. Very often, images need to be changed to accommodate a smaller screen.

There may even be times when mobile users need to be redirected from one URL to another for a better user experience.

As long as the redirect sends the user to a page that is essentially identical, it is a perfectly legitimate use of a redirect.

If mobile users are secretly redirected to other content, it will result in poor user experience and result in a penalty.

WARNING: Sneaky mobile redirects are common unintentionally and can happen without the webmaster's direct knowledge. This often happens when:

  • Code is added that creates redirect rules for mobile users.
  • A script or element is added to display ads and redirect mobile users.
  • Hackers add a script or element that redirects mobile users to a malicious website.

The repair

If you don't intentionally engage in sneaky redirects: Check the Security Issues Report to see if your website has been hacked.

Review all third party scripts and elements on your web pages.

After confirming that your website was not hacked, the next step is to investigate whether any scripts or third-party elements are causing the problem.

Follow these steps:

  1. One by one, remove any third-party scripts or items that you don't control.
  2. Next, check your site on a mobile device or emulator to see if the redirect has stopped.
  3. Once you've identified a specific script or element that you believe is responsible for the sneaky redirect, remove it from your site. If this script is important, work on debugging the problem, then reinstall and test it.

If you are deliberately involved in underhanded redirects: Make the necessary changes to be compliant with Google guidelines.

  • Confirm compliance by reviewing your site on a mobile device or emulator.
  • After making the necessary changes and completing your review, navigate to Google Search Console> Security & Manual Actions> Manual Actions and request a review. As with any re-verification, be frank and honest – explain how the error occurred and what specific measures were taken to prevent it from happening again.
  • Keep an eye on your Search Console account. Here, Google informs you that the website has been checked. Assuming your website no longer violates policies, the manual action is revoked.

Pro tip: Be proactive. Always check the mobile versions of pages that contain code or script elements that redirect mobile users in the URL inspection tool to avoid self-inflicted penalty.

Camouflaged images

As already mentioned, camouflage means that users are shown different content than Google.

For example, provide images that:

  • Obscured by another image.
  • Are served differently from the picture.
  • Direct users away from the picture.

The repair

  1. Show Google the exact same picture as your website users.
  2. Submit a re-examination request after resolving the problem.

Pro tip: Check all the plugins you have installed to make sure that you do not experience an image cloaking problem.

AMP content mismatch

AMP content is different from the canonical version of the website.

Both versions must be essentially the same. That doesn't mean the text has to be the same, but actually they have to match.

Everything a user can achieve on the AMP side should also be possible on the canonical side, and vice versa.

Any AMP pages affected by manual action will be removed from Google search and the canonical version will be displayed in their place.

The repair

  1. Make sure the AMP page is mapped to the correct canonical page.
  2. Check that the content of the AMP and the canonical pages are generally the same. Edit as needed.
  3. Make sure that Google's view of the page is what the user sees. This can be achieved using the URL inspection tool. This works for both the canonical and AMP versions of the page. It is not uncommon for a mismatch to occur when a robots.txt file is blocking resources on one side or the other. This tool will, among other things, expose this problem.
  4. Once you've synced your AMP and Canonical pages, navigate to Google Search Console> Security & Manual Actions> Manual Actions and request a review.
  5. Keep an eye on your Search Console account. Here, Google informs you that the website has been checked. Assuming your website no longer violates policies, the manual action is revoked.

Pro tip: Be proactive. Always check both the AMP and canonical versions of a page in the URL inspection tool to avoid self-inflicted penalty.

Hidden text and / or keyword filling

The headline says it all. Google found that your website was guilty of using hidden text or keyword stuffing.

  2. Site-wide matches Impact on your entire website.

  2. Look for text that is the same or a similar color to the main body of the webpage.
  3. Find hidden text using CSS style or positioning.
  4. Remove hidden text or redesign it so that it is obvious to the human user.
