Instagram Reels Hack # 1: Create Creative Original Content
If you want to show up on the Instagram Roles tab, creating original content is key.
With the thousands – maybe millions – of developers sharing reels on Instagram every day, thinking about original ideas is a huge task.
Fortunately, you don't have to completely reinvent the wheel when planning your Instagram roles. The main thing is to create content that is educational or enjoyable – with your own unique twist.
By adding your own little twist or perspective, you can take any existing idea and create something fresh and appealing.
For example, if you're a photographer, this could be a series of hacks for camera settings, fun places, or your favorite portraits like @myparisportraits:
Instagram has confirmed that it will prioritize videos that are not visibly recycled from third-party apps. Creating original content in the Reels Editor can therefore also help improve your visibility.
Creating original content can take some time and effort, but it is one of the best ways to hack the algorithm and stand out in your niche.

Instagram Reels Hack # 2: Include Subtitles
It's no secret that creating video content, be it for Instagram Stories or Instagram Reels, is one of the best ways to make your content more accessible.
We know that 85% of the videos on Facebook are viewed with no sound. So adding subtitles to your videos is a breeze when it comes to reaching more users.
Also, not only are subtitles great for people watching without sound, but they're also invaluable for people with hearing problems.
Automated subtitles are not (yet!) Available on Instagram. In the meantime, however, there are ways to create broader roles now.
To add video subtitles, manually enter your audio in text boxes and display them on the screen as you watch the video.
For a faster approach, you can use apps like Subtitles – Video Captions Mix, Clipomatic, and MixCaptions to automatically generate subtitles for you.
TIP: Make sure your subtitles are visible in every part of the Instagram app by positioning them in the center of your screen (more on that later).
Instagram Reels Hack # 3: Remove TikTok Watermark
Instagram recently announced that it is penalizing roles that are visibly recycled from other apps. This means they are less likely to show up on the Instagram Explore page and Roles tab.
So, if you want to use your TikTok videos for Instagram roles, the first thing you should do is remove the TikTok watermark.
How to remove a TikTok watermark:
- Before uploading your final video to TikTok, record it on the screen. Then crop the screen capture in your photo album to remove the TikTok watermark.
- Use a watermark removal tool like Snaptik App, MusicallyDown, or Apowersoft's Online Watermark Removal.
Instagram Reels Hack # 4: Keep your subtitles short and sweet
There's a time and place for long captions on Instagram (hello, Instagram feed posts!), But because of the dimensions of reels, short and cute captions are the way to go.
When sharing an Instagram role, the first line can be up to 55 characters. If you exceed this amount, it will follow your label "… more" for viewers to type and read the rest.
And when they click "…More" Key, the roll is not stopped. Instead, it opens the caption, darkens the video, and makes it harder for your audience to read the text or see what's going on on your reel.
Try to write a first line that is both engaging and enticing. Whenever possible, include only relevant tags and hashtags on the next line.
For example, @shinewithnatasha captivates her audience by adding a quick one-liner to the top of her caption that is both enticing and engaging. If someone clicks to read more, they'll find additional context about the video and a CTA.
TIP: Include a CTA in your Instagram Reels caption! Encouraging your audience to comment on and engage with your videos can increase your reach.
Instagram Reels Hack # 5: Quickly Hop On Trends
Similar to TikTok, roles come and go very quickly.
Take a few minutes each morning to scroll through the Instagram Roles tab and other developers' profiles to see what they are sharing.
Is there something that keeps popping up – a particular song? An audio clip? A dance trend?
If so, click the music to see how many other creators have used the audio. Scroll through the videos to get an idea of the trend. For example, the "Watcha Say" trend has been a huge hit on Instagram Reels lately.
Another option is to jump over to TikTok and see what's hot there. If you spot a trend that isn't on reels yet, your chance to be the first to get it on Instagram.
Instagram Reels Hack # 6: Share Your Roles Using Your Feed
In case you didn't know, sharing roles on your Instagram feed is one of the best ways to improve your views and increase your chances of going viral.
So make sure you share your roles directly on your Instagram feed.
Otherwise, your role may not be seen by your community.
If you're worried about ruining your Instagram aesthetic, you can upload an Instagram Reel cover photo so it goes well with the rest of your content.
You can also decide at any time to remove the role from your feed at a later time.

Instagram Reels Hack # 7: Optimize Text Placement on the Screen
Whether you are adding subtitles or additional text, where you place the on-screen text is extremely important.
If your audience can't easily see the text, they'll likely scroll right by your video – which can be a major blocker for engagement.
When adding text, make sure it's within 4: 5 dimensions, especially if you're sharing it on your feed.
This way, the text will be visible when a user clicks on your reel-in feed.
While this doesn't sound like a big deal, carefully curating your text placement will make it a lot more enjoyable for your audience.
Instagram Reels Hack # 8: Find Your Niche And Post Consistently
One of the best ways to get virality on Instagram Reels is to find your niche and post it consistently.
There are so many Instagram users out there with a wide variety of interests and hobbies. No matter what your brand or company does, there is a niche for you!
If you're a wellness brand, you can share meditation tips like @malacollective. If you're a bakery, you can go behind the scenes in the kitchen like @jennaraecakes:
And even if your first few roles don't bring much traction or engagement, keep going! As with everything else on social media, it's all about trial and error.
Instagram Reels Hack # 9: Provide Value and Share Educational Content
If you thought reels were only for the latest dance trends, think again. There are tons of developers going viral by sharing informative content.
Educational content creation provides a valuable service to your audience and helps you position yourself as an expert on a particular topic.
Jera Foster Fell does an excellent job here. She has cemented herself as a social media marketing expert by regularly sharing tips, tricks, and content behind the scenes for her entrepreneurial community.
Instagram Reels Hack # 10: Include hashtags
While there aren't any insights into Instagram reels yet, adding hashtags can be a great way to help the Instagram algorithm "understand" your content and make it available to relevant audiences.
For example, if you use hashtags like #easyrecipes, #mealideas, and #dinnerinspiration, it will tell the Instagram Reels algorithm that your content is food. This can make them more likely to be served to users who are actively engaged in similar content.
After Instagram introduced keyword search in several countries, users searching for related topics can discover your content.

Instagram Reels Hack # 11: Use Music From Instagram Library Or Create Your Own Audio

Finding the right music for your video can be a challenge, but luckily, Instagram has an extensive Instagram music library to choose from.
You can browse music curated just for you, search by title and category, or use the search bar to find a specific song.
