As of September 2020, TikTok has accumulated more than 800 million active users worldwide and the app has been downloaded over 2 billion times from the App Store and Google Play. To commemorate a year of success, the app released its annual edition of TikTok 100 – an annual recap, highlighting the key videos, genres, creators, and memes that have taken the internet by storm.
“From a global pandemic that led us to social distancing, to protests for racial equality, community hardships, and personal and economic insecurities around the world, 2020 was full of emotion. During those moments, millions of Americans turned to TikTok to share their stories and uplift others, ”the platform shared.
Below are some highlights from 2020 to find out how your brand can get a part of the promotion and create your own TikTok experience.
Top viral videos

Top trends, hashtags and challenges
It's no secret now that TikTok is the birthplace of trends – be it related to a dance, a new comedy format, or a memorable quote – and there was no shortage of those viral moments in 2020.
Among those who deserve top spots are them #blindinglights Dance challenge. The moment set on The Weeknd's hit "Blinding Lights" brought families and friends together, coupled with a love of song and looking for ways to have some fun at home by dancing during the pandemic. The hashtag #blindinglights has roughly 3.5 billion Views.
Speaking of social distancing, another trend that kept users entertained during the COVID. Curtis RoachIt's "Bored In The House" – a quarantine anthem that has inspired over 4.5 million videos to date, and the hashtag #boredinthehouse has roughly 4.8 billion Views.

"Those who gave the trend its own twist include household names like Dr. Phil and catfish’S Nev Schulman.
Finally, who could forget that Time warp scan Feature that freezes an image when a blue line crosses the screen, allowing for limitless creative transformation? The hashtag #timewarpscan was displayed over 14.3 billion Times until today.
Top creators and celebrities
Developers are at the heart of TikTok, and this year many have stepped up the delivery of videos that are authentic, who they are and which brands align with their goals and values. We saw a tremendous cultural shift as voices were used to spread awareness of the pandemic, Black Lives Matter, underrepresented communities and more. The platform continues to be a launchpad for those who want to create and inspire community.
So who were the biggest breakout stars? The list of TikTok's top developers is headed by none other than Charli D’Amelioand also includes familiar names including Addison Rae, Bella Poarch and Noah Beck.
A separate list of creators with the name "Most effectiveAcknowledged the Creators for their efforts in the fight for positive change in the US and around the world. The top three in this group were Doctor Leslie (@drleslie), Taylor Cassidy (@taylorcassidy) and Sienna Mae (@siennamae).
In the celebrity area, Jason Derulo came out victorious, followed by Kylie Jenner and Lizzo. Others who made the top 10 are Tyga, Charlie Puth, Shay Mitchell ♥, Jack Black, Lil Yachty, China McClain, and Dr. Phil.
TikTok's top 10 songs feature hits from established hitmakers, emerging stars, and previously unknown artists. The undiminished creativity of the platform transformed the sounds into haunting experiences in a COVID-19 world where personal experiences including concerts were possible for longer.
