This is episode 102 with industrial vet Phillip Thune.
Phillip Thune's Deep Story Looking:
Phillip Thune is the current CEO of Textbroker and has been with us for over 10 years. However, he continues to go back into the search area and works for FindWhat in the early 2000s. FindWhat, also known as Miva, was a competitor to Google Ads before Google AdWords launched. FindWhat competed directly with GoTo, also known as Overture, which was eventually acquired by Yahoo. So FindWhat was number two behind Overture until Google AdWords launched. We briefly talked about the old days of the Yahoo-Google litigation, as well as FindWhat related to patent infringement for search ads. He was pretty frugal in the way he ran FindWhat, despite the lavish parties that were going on in the room at the time.
What Textbroker does:
Textbroker is his focus now and he described how the business works and who Textbroker works for. In short, Textbroker writes content for businesses, not just for SEO purposes, but probably heavily for SEO purposes as well. 90% of the inquiries are related to SEO. Textbroker currently has around 100 employees and the demand for content is growing all the time, he said. Phillip is an expert in search, the industry and now also content marketing – especially for identifying trends based on content requests.
Run the business:
The data he has access to these trends is impressive, but what impresses me more are the metrics he uses to manage his business. That means he can see all the content requests, what bandwidth is available and how he is using it to ensure that the quality and demand of the content go hand in hand. He said that when there is a high demand for content, he will often find that the availability of these content writers increases. I find the way he runs his business inspiring. Phillip has written and reviewed editorial content in the past, but very rarely does. And putting their feet in the shoes of the writer or the client is a good thing for a CEO.
There's more to come….
