Patrick Stox (@patrickstox) is now a Product Advisor, Technical SEO, and Brand Ambassador at Ahrefs. He was previously at IBM and worked there for four years. This was my last interview at SMX West, so I was a little wacky and having too much fun.
Ahrefs is a software company that is strong at links and research. A new feature he said was affecting authors in the Content Explorer tool. So check out this new feature. We then talked a little bit about the coronavirus before either of us really knew how bad it was going to be, so I apologize if it got insensitive.
Rel next and prev was our next topic of conversation. Pagination used to be a big technical SEO topic. We discussed how rel-next / prev stopped working, but Google didn't tell us until after that and no SEO really knew. Patrick said SEOs are doing all of these things now to help Google index these pages, but Patrick said don't do that, leave it alone – let Google find out.
Patrick is one of the moderators on the TechSEO Reddit sub-forum. Google's John Mueller did an AMA on these forums. In fact, John and Gary hang out there a lot. He loves Reddit because it's a way to help out in the community. He said he learned a lot by wearing googlers. He also heads a TechSEO Slack group. If you want, reach out to him on Twitter or Reddit. He also runs Beer and SEO and some other events that he runs.
This was heavy sarcasm in case you didn't get it.
